The unsettling British series that explores our relationship with technology has a disturbing way of anticipating possible futures – especially when it comes to artificial intelligence.

From digital cookies that replicate human consciousness to autonomous systems that decide who lives or dies, Black Mirror presents us with a black mirror that reflects not only our fears, but also technological trajectories already in motion. Let's explore the abyss – or perhaps the thin line – between dystopian fiction and our current technological reality.

Digital Consciousness and Black Mirror's "Cookies"

In episodes like "White Christmas" and "Black Museum," Charlie Brooker introduces us to a fascinating concept: the possibility of copying human consciousness to a digital device called a "cookie." These digital replicas retain memories, personality, and the sensation of being the original human – often with devastating consequences for these imprisoned consciousnesses.

But how far are we from this reality?

Although we cannot (yet) transfer consciousnesses to machines, advances in deep learning and language models bring us closer to something equally disturbing: convincing simulations of human personalities.

Today, virtual assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can:

  • Maintain conversations that seem human

  • Adapt their tone and communication style

  • Remember details from previous interactions

  • Simulate emotions and empathy

Experts like Dr. Melanie Mitchell, professor of computer science at the Santa Fe Institute and author of "Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans," frequently emphasize that Large Language Models may give the impression of being conscious, but are actually statistical systems that learn patterns of human language. In 2023, companies like HereAfter AI were already offering services to create "digital twins" of deceased people, allowing family members to "converse" with digital versions of loved ones. Using hours of recorded interviews and natural language processing, these replicas can answer questions and share stories with the voice and personality of the deceased.

We're not that far from the episode "Be Right Back," where a grieving woman uses a similar service to recreate her deceased boyfriend – first as a conversational AI, then as a physical android.

The question that remains is not so much if we can, but if we should.

Social Scoring Systems: Is "Nosedive" Already Among Us?

One of the most discussed episodes, "Nosedive," presents a world where each social interaction is rated from 1 to 5 stars, creating a stratified society based on personal scores. People with high scores enjoy exclusive privileges, while those with low scores face constant discrimination.

This dystopia seemed specific to science fiction when the episode was released in 2016. Today, elements of this system already exist:

  • China: The Social Credit System monitors citizens' behavior, rewarding "positive behaviors" and restricting opportunities for those who receive low scores.

  • Sharing apps: From Uber to Airbnb, we are constantly being evaluated, with real consequences for our access to services.

  • Social networks: Virtual engagement (likes, shares, followers) determines visibility and professional opportunities.

Professor Shoshana Zuboff of Harvard Business School, in her influential book "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism," analyzes how we are moving toward a world where people are increasingly treated as data objects. Her studies show that the gamification of social life goes beyond entertainment, constituting a form of behavioral control through metrics and automatic classifications.

Reputation Algorithms: The Price of Digital Trust

Companies like Clearview AI already use facial recognition and algorithms to create behavioral profiles, while credit scores and hiring algorithms determine who has access to resources and opportunities.

AI doesn't need to be sentient to profoundly shape our lives – it just needs the power to decide who we are based on fragmented data about our behavior.

Autonomous Artificial Intelligence: The Robot Dog from "Metalhead"

The episode "Metalhead," filmed in black and white to enhance the sense of desolation, features relentless robot dogs that hunt human survivors in a post-apocalyptic world. These autonomous machines make lethal decisions without human supervision.

In 2020, Boston Dynamics launched Spot, a commercial robot dog whose resemblance to the machines in the episode sent chills through the tech community. Although the current Spot is designed for industrial and security applications, the evolution of autonomous robotics raises questions about the limits we should establish.

The US Department of Defense and other military organizations already use autonomous drones and weapons systems that can select and attack targets with minimal human intervention. The "Stop Killer Robots" campaign warns that we are dangerously approaching fully autonomous weapons systems.

Stuart Russell, Professor of Computer Science at UC Berkeley and a pioneer in AI research, has warned in his testimonies to the United Nations that autonomous weapons systems represent the third revolution in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear weapons. In his publications, Russell emphasizes that the distance between current systems and fully autonomous weapons is rapidly diminishing, raising ethical questions that demand immediate attention.

AI in Critical Decision-Making

Beyond physical robots, algorithms already make decisions that affect human lives:

  • Medical diagnostic systems decide who receives priority attention

  • Bail algorithms determine who remains imprisoned awaiting trial

  • Hiring AI decides who gets job interviews
